Charge air cooler (CAC) hoses carry turbocharged intake air at elevated pressure and temperature, and standard worm-drive clamps are not adequate for this application. T-bolt clamps are the correct choice for CAC hoses — they provide uniform 360-degree clamping force and maintain their hold under the thermal cycling and pressure pulses these connections experience. Use the clamp size specified for the hose OD at each connection point, and torque to the specification in your service manual. A loose CAC hose connection causes boost leaks, which reduce engine power and can trigger turbo overspeed as the ECM attempts to compensate.
Can I use standard automotive hoses on a Peterbilt, or do I need heavy-duty specific hoses?
Heavy-duty truck hoses are not interchangeable with standard automotive hoses. Peterbilt coolant hoses are engineered for higher operating temperatures, larger diameters, and greater wall thickness than passenger car hoses. Charge air hoses must withstand positive boost pressure and high heat — standard silicone or EPDM automotive hoses are not rated for these conditions.
