How do flatbed trailer winches work?
Flatbed trailer winches are ratcheting devices mounted in slots along the trailer side rails, used to tension winch straps over loads. The winch drum accepts the end of a winch strap; cranking the winch with a bar through the ratchet mechanism winds the strap onto the drum and tensions it over the load. Most flatbed trailers have 20 to 25 winch slots along each side rail, allowing flexible positioning to secure loads at multiple points. Winches can also be slid along the rail to position them directly over the load tie-down point.
How do I maintain flatbed trailer winches?
Winch maintenance involves keeping the ratchet mechanism clean and free of debris that causes it to slip or bind, lubricating the ratchet pawl and pivot point periodically, and inspecting the winch body for cracks or deformation from impact or overloading. Winches that don't ratchet smoothly or that release under load should be replaced -- a winch that slips in service allows the strap to lose tension and the load to shift. Also inspect the rail mounting hardware and the winch body where it contacts the rail for wear or damage that prevents it from locking securely in position.
What is the load capacity of a standard flatbed trailer winch?
Standard flatbed trailer winches are typically rated for 10,000 to 12,000 lbs of working load limit when used with a properly rated winch strap. The working load limit of the complete strap-and-winch system is limited by the lower-rated component -- a high-rated winch with an undersized strap, or a strong strap on a worn winch, reduces the system's effective capacity. For loads requiring higher securement forces, heavier-rated winches and straps rated accordingly are available. Always verify that the combined WLL of the securement system meets FMCSA requirements for the load being hauled.
