Binders For Peterbilt Trucks
Load binders are essential cargo securement hardware for flatbed and open-deck operations, used to tension chains over loads and keep freight from shifting in transit. We carry both lever-style (snap) binders and ratchet binders in a range of chain sizes and working load limit ratings. Find binders that meet DOT load securement requirements and match the chain grade you're running.
Frequently asked questions about binders
What's the difference between a lever binder and a ratchet binder?
A lever binder (also called a snap binder) uses a cam-action lever that snaps over center to tension the chain. They're quick to apply but require more physical force, and the lever can release suddenly if not positioned carefully. A ratchet binder uses a ratcheting mechanism that allows gradual tensioning with less effort and holds its position more predictably. Ratchet binders are generally preferred for heavy loads and are increasingly common because they're easier to use safely.
How do I match a binder to my chain?
Binders are rated for specific chain sizes — typically 5/16", 3/8", or 1/2" — and must match both the chain link size and the working load limit of the chain in use. Mixing a lower-rated binder with a higher-rated chain (or vice versa) compromises the system's rated capacity. Always verify that the binder's working load limit meets or exceeds the requirements for the cargo you're hauling.
Do load binders need to be inspected under DOT rules?
Yes. Under FMCSA cargo securement regulations (49 CFR Part 393), all tie-down devices including binders must be in proper working condition. Binders with cracks, deformation, missing or broken parts, or wear exceeding manufacturer's limits are not acceptable for use. Drivers should inspect binders before every use and replace any showing damage. Maintaining an equipment inspection log is good practice and supports compliance in the event of a roadside audit.
