Antifreeze & Starting Fluid For Peterbilt Trucks
Keeping your cooling system protected and your engine ready to fire in cold weather are two of the most basic requirements of truck maintenance. We carry antifreeze and coolant products formulated for heavy-duty diesel engines, along with starting fluid for cold-weather cranking. Whether you're topping off during a PM or prepping your rig for a hard winter, you'll find the right products here.
Frequently asked questions about antifreeze & starting fluid
What type of antifreeze should I use in my Peterbilt?
Peterbilt trucks with PACCAR engines typically require heavy-duty coolant meeting ASTM D6210 or OEM approval for extended life coolant (ELC). Always check your owner's manual or service documentation for your specific model. Mixing coolant types — for example, combining conventional green coolant with an OAT or HOAT extended-life formula — can lead to additive depletion and reduced corrosion protection.
How often should I change the coolant in my Peterbilt?
Conventional heavy-duty coolants typically require a change every two years or 300,000 miles, whichever comes first. Extended life coolants (ELC) can last up to 600,000 miles or six years with proper SCA maintenance. Regular coolant testing with test strips or a refractometer helps catch depletion before it leads to liner pitting or corrosion damage.
Is it safe to use starting fluid in a diesel engine?
Starting fluid (ether) should be used sparingly and only when necessary for cold starts. Overuse can wash cylinder walls, damage injectors, and cause detonation. Many newer Peterbilt models with glow plugs or grid heaters don't require starting fluid at all — using it on those engines can cause damage. When it is needed, a brief burst is sufficient. Never use starting fluid on engines equipped with glow plugs unless the manufacturer specifically permits it.
