Frequently asked questions about backup & spotlights
Are LED backup lights worth the upgrade over halogen?
In most cases, yes. LED backup lights draw significantly less current, run cooler, and have a much longer service life than halogen bulbs — often lasting the life of the truck without replacement. They also illuminate instantly with no warm-up lag. The upfront cost is higher, but reduced maintenance and energy savings make LED the practical choice for most fleet and owner-operator applications.
What are the DOT requirements for backup lights on commercial trucks?
FMVSS 108 requires at least one white backup lamp activated when reverse gear is engaged. Many commercial trucks use two backup lamps for better coverage. Lights must produce a white output meeting minimum intensity requirements. Some states and job site regulations may have additional requirements — worth checking if you operate in specialized environments like construction zones or ports.
Can I add a spotlight to my Peterbilt without rewiring the cab?
Many spotlights are designed for easy installation using existing 12V power sources or a simple direct-to-battery connection with an inline fuse. Magnetic-mount work lights offer the most flexible positioning without permanent wiring. For hardwired applications, running a dedicated circuit from the fuse panel is the cleanest approach and avoids overloading an existing circuit.
