Oil & Grease For Peterbilt Trucks
The right lubricants in the right places are fundamental to commercial truck reliability. Engine oil, gear oil, axle lubricants, and chassis greases all serve specific functions and need to meet the viscosity and additive specifications required by the systems they protect. We carry engine oils, gear lubricants, axle oils, and chassis greases for Peterbilt trucks in the grades and specifications required for PACCAR and other heavy-duty drivetrain applications.
Frequently asked questions about oil & grease
What grease should I use for fifth wheel lubrication on a Peterbilt?
Fifth wheel lubrication requires a grease specifically formulated for the high-load, low-speed sliding contact between the fifth wheel plate and the trailer kingpin. NLGI Grade 1 or 2 multi-purpose EP (extreme pressure) grease or a dedicated fifth wheel grease product is the standard recommendation. Avoid using dry film lubricants or chassis grease on the fifth wheel plate -- they don't provide adequate lubrication under the sustained loads of a loaded trailer, and inadequate fifth wheel lubrication causes premature kingpin, lock jaw, and plate wear.
What chassis grease points need regular lubrication on a Peterbilt?
Common grease points on a Peterbilt include U-joint crosses and slip yokes (on trucks with greaseable driveshafts), king pin bushings (on greaseable steer axles), steering linkage tie rod ends and drag link ends, S-cam bushings, slack adjuster pivot points, and any suspension components with grease fittings. The frequency varies by location -- U-joints and steering components typically need greasing every 15,000 to 25,000 miles, while some suspension components are lube-for-life sealed units. Always use a compatible NLGI-grade grease and follow the OEM specifications for each lubrication point.
Can I mix different brands of engine oil in my Peterbilt diesel?
Mixing engine oil brands of the same API specification and viscosity grade is generally acceptable in a top-off situation. Most modern CK-4 diesel engine oils from reputable manufacturers are compatible with each other. Where mixing becomes a concern is adding a significantly different viscosity grade or mixing API specifications -- for example, adding CJ-4 oil to a CK-4 fill. For routine top-offs between oil changes, using the same brand and grade as the current fill is best practice. At the next scheduled oil change, drain and refill with a consistent product.
