Landing Gear For Peterbilt Trucks

Trailer landing gear -- the retractable leg assembly that supports the front of a semi-trailer when it's uncoupled from the tractor -- takes a beating over the life of a trailer. Bent or seized landing gear legs, stripped gearboxes, and broken cranks are common issues that can leave a trailer unusable at the dock or drop lot. We carry landing gear assemblies, replacement legs, gearboxes, and crank handles for common trailer configurations used with Peterbilt trucks.

Frequently asked questions about landing gear

What causes landing gear to fail or become hard to crank?

The most common causes are internal gear wear from years of use under heavy loads, lack of lubrication at the gear mechanism and sliding tubes, corrosion that seizes the telescoping leg sections, and bent leg tubes from contact with loading docks or uneven surfaces. Landing gear that requires excessive force to raise or lower should be inspected -- a seized or binding landing gear creates unsafe conditions when coupling or uncoupling a loaded trailer.

Can I replace just the gearbox on landing gear, or does the whole assembly need to come out?

In many cases the gearbox can be replaced independently of the landing gear legs. The gearbox is typically bolted to the crossmember and can be removed and replaced with the legs in place. For bent or severely corroded leg tubes, a full landing gear assembly replacement is usually more practical than trying to source individual tube sections. When replacing just one side due to damage, inspect the other side carefully -- if the gear has high mileage, replacing both sides at the same time avoids a repeat failure shortly after.

What is the difference between single-speed and two-speed landing gear?

Single-speed landing gear cranks at one fixed gear ratio. Two-speed landing gear has a high-speed mode for quickly raising or lowering the legs when unloaded and a low-speed, high-torque mode for lifting a heavily loaded trailer nose. Two-speed gear is the standard choice for OTR operations where the driver frequently couples and uncouples loaded trailers. The speed change is typically accomplished by reversing the crank handle direction, which is straightforward once drivers learn the technique.
