How often should coolant hoses be replaced on a Peterbilt?

Most coolant hose manufacturers recommend proactive replacement every 4–6 years or 200,000–300,000 miles regardless of appearance, as internal degradation often precedes visible exterior cracking. At every PM service, hoses should be squeezed by hand when cold — a hose that feels mushy, excessively soft, or has a sticky inner surface is breaking down from the inside and should be replaced before it fails. Pay particular attention to lower radiator hoses, which run cooler and are more prone to internal collapse.

What causes fuel lines to fail on a diesel truck?

Rubber fuel lines degrade from prolonged contact with diesel and biodiesel blends, particularly higher-concentration biodiesel (B20 and above) that attacks certain rubber compounds. Heat from proximity to the exhaust accelerates degradation in lines routed near the turbo or exhaust manifold. Hardline fuel lines corrode from the outside in environments with road salt exposure. A fuel line that's seeping, cracked, or soft to the touch should be replaced immediately — a fuel leak near a hot engine is a fire hazard.

Can I use universal hose to replace a formed Peterbilt coolant hose?

Straight universal hose can work in some applications, but formed hoses are shaped to route correctly within the tight confines of an engine bay without kinking. Using straight hose where a formed elbow or compound curve is needed often results in a hose that kinks under vibration or pinches at a bend, restricting flow. Where a direct-fit formed replacement is available for your Peterbilt application, it's the better choice. Universal hose with separate elbow sections can approximate a formed hose when the original isn't available.
