Log Books & Reports For Peterbilt Trucks
Paper logs, inspection report forms, and trip documentation supplies remain essential compliance tools for commercial drivers -- whether as primary records for drivers exempt from ELD requirements or as backup documentation for ELD-equipped operations. We carry driver log books, pre-trip and post-trip inspection report forms, and other documentation supplies that keep your operation compliant with FMCSA recordkeeping requirements.
Frequently asked questions about log books & reports
Are paper log books still required for commercial drivers?
Most commercial drivers subject to FMCSA hours-of-service rules are now required to use an ELD (electronic logging device) rather than paper logs. However, paper logs are still required for certain exempt operations -- including short-haul drivers who qualify for the short-haul exception, drivers of vehicles older than model year 2000, and drivers operating under certain agricultural exemptions. Even ELD-equipped drivers are required to carry a supply of paper logs for use when the ELD malfunctions.
What vehicle inspection forms do commercial drivers need to carry?
FMCSA regulations (49 CFR 396.11) require drivers to complete a Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) at the end of each day they operate a commercial vehicle, documenting any defects or deficiencies found. The report must be signed by the driver and reviewed by the motor carrier. A copy of the previous day's DVIR must be carried in the vehicle. DVIRs must be retained by the carrier for at least three months. Pre-trip inspection checklists, while not always required to be filed, are a best practice for systematic inspection documentation.
How many paper logs should I keep in my Peterbilt?
FMCSA regulations require drivers who use paper logs to have enough blank log forms in the vehicle to complete logs for the duration of the trip. The minimum practical supply is enough for the current trip plus several extra days as a buffer. For ELD-equipped drivers, maintaining a supply of 8 days of blank paper log forms is the standard recommendation, as ELD regulations require paper logs to be available when the ELD cannot record data due to a malfunction.
